Frank Waters Preston travel diary, January 21, 1905-February 22, 1905
Creator/Contributor:
Preston, Frank Waters, approximately 1880-1951, creator, creator.
Abstract:
Travel diary of Frank W. Preston entitled A Winter Cruise in the Tropics from Frisco to New York. The diary documents a trip
Frank W. Preston took with his friend on board the City of Panama steamer (in steerage) from San Francisco to New York in
early 1905. The diary consists of a typescript table of contents, an introduction, and 46 pages of body content. There are
also two sheets of hand-drawn caricatures that are based on Jewish, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican racial and ethnic stereotypes.
One of these sheets is at the front of the book and another is inserted between pages 15 and 16. On the inside front cover,
Paterson has inscribed his name, his hometown (Paterson, New Jersey) and pasted a photograph (presumably of himself). The
diary covers Preston's trip from his departure from San Francisco on January 21, 1905 to his arrival in New York on February
22, 1905. The table of contents for the diary provides a near daily itinerary. In the introduction to the diary, Preston provides
some advice about essential items for travelers on such a journey. In the body of the diary, Preston discusses scenery, weather,
his fellow travelers, his health and food. He makes derogatory comments about one Jewish passenger, in particular, who Preston
returns to frequently and presents as a target of continual harassment and even violence during the voyage. He also details
interactions with "natives" during stops at various ports in Central America and with one young Chinese passenger on board
the ship. The most detailed description in the diary are reserved for his meals, which he mentions on almost every page.
